Meski dahulunya Nancy adalah ibu kota Kadipaten Lorraine, Metzlah yang kemudian dipilih sebagai ibu kota région Lorraine yang baru dibentuk pada pertengahan abad ke-20, karena sejarah masa lalunya sebagai ibu kota kawasan Lothringen - asal yang lebih bersifat republik - lebih bersahabat dibandingkan dengan teori terkait kadipaten yang menunjuk Nancy sebagai ibu kota kawasan.
