Arkansas merupakan sebuah negara bagian Amerika Serikat. Negara bagian ini terletak di bagian selatan. Pada tahun 2000, negara bagian ini memiliki jumlah penduduk sebesar 2.673.400 jiwa dan memiliki luas wilayah 137.002 km². Ibu kotanya adalah Little Rock.
Negara bagian ini memiliki angka kepadatan penduduk sebesar 51,34 jiwa/km².
Etimologi
Nama Arkansas diturunkan dari akar yang sama dari nama Kansas. Namun, pengucapannya lebih banyak dipengaruhi oleh bangsa Prancis (yang mengucapkan huruf 's' diakhir kata secara samar). Kata "Arkansas" berasal dari kata "Arcansas" yang berarti "tanah milik orang yang tinggal di dekat sungai".
Pada tahun 1881, pengucapan kata "Arkansas" dengan huruf 's' terakhir disamarkan seperti /ˈɑːrkənsɔː/ diresmikan dengan sebuah undang-undang, setelah beberapa argumen sengit, yang menginginkan "Arkansas" dieja seperti /ɑːrˈkænzəs/.
Dengan demikian, pengucapan Arkansas juga sama dengan pengucapan Illinois, yakni dengan huruf 's' disamarkan.
