Polypterus atau ikan palmas[1] adalah genus ikan air tawar dalam famili Polypteridae, ordo Polypteriformes (ikan Bichir). Ikan dalam genus ini hidup di berbagai daerah di Afrika. Etimologi nama genus berasal dari kombinasi awalan Yunani πολυ-, poly- (banyak) dan akar kata πτερον, pteron (sayap atau sirip) - berarti "banyak sirip". Polypterus adalah satu-satunya vertebrata yang diketahui memiliki paru-paru, tetapi tidak ada trakea.[2] [3] [4]
