Setaria adalah genus tumbuhan yang tersebar luas dalam keluarga rumput.[5][6] Nama genus ini berasal dari kata Latin seta yang berarti "bulu" atau "rambut", yang mengacu pada bintik-bintiknya yang kasar.[7] Genus ini mencakup lebih dari 100 spesies tumbuhan yang tersebar di daerah beriklim tropis dan beriklim sedang di seluruh dunia.[8]
