Polygonaceae adalah salah satu suku anggota tumbuhan berbunga. Menurut Sistem klasifikasi APG II suku ini dimasukkan ke dalam bangsa Caryophyllales, klad dikotil inti (core Eudikotil) tetapi tidak termasuk ke dalam dua kelompok besar, Rosidae dan asteridae. Nama famili tumbuhan ini berasal dari salah satu genusnya yakni Polygonum, dan pertama kali digunakan oleh Antoine Laurent de Jussieu pada tahun 1789 dalam bukunya yang berjudul "Genera Plantarum".[1]

Polygonaceae terdiri dari sekitar 1200 spesies[2] dalam 48 genus tanaman.[3] Lima genus terbesar di dalam famili ini yakni Eriogonum (240 spesies), Rumex (200 spesies), Coccoloba (120 spesies), Persicaria (100 spesies) dan Calligonum ( 80 spesies).[4][5] Famili tanaman ini dapat ditemukan di seluruh dunia, tetapi paling beragam di Zona Beriklim Utara.
