Paeonia qiui adalah spesies peoni yang sangat mirip dengan P. jishanensis, namun dengan dedaunan yang lebih terbagi. Tumbuhan ini dapat mencapai tinggi hingga 1,2 m.[1] Karakteristik identifikasi: kelopak bunga dengan bercak merah di bagian dasar; anak daun sebagian besar rata (tidak bercuping), seringkali berwarna ungu di bagian atas; bunga tunggal.[2]
P. qiui berkerabat paling dekat dengan P. cathayana dan P. jishanensis.[3]
