Mathcore adalah subgenre dari hardcore punk dan metalcore yang dipengaruhi oleh post-hardcore, metal ekstrem dan math rock yang berkembang pada tahun 1990-an. Band-band dalam genre ini menekankan ritme yang kompleks dan berfluktuasi melalui penggunaan tanda waktu tidak beraturan, polimeter, sinkopasi, dan perubahan tempo. Lirik mathcore kebanyakan berisi pandangan dunia yang realistis dan dengan sudut pandang pesimis, menentang, kebencian atau sarkastik.

Pada 1990-an, hardcore punk mulai merangkul extreme metal secara terbuka. Hardcore punk juga mulai menjadi sangat ideologis, [butuh klarifikasi] dengan sebagian besar band populer menjadi bagian dari berbagai subkultur. Hal ini menyebabkan band-band seperti Converge, Botch, Coalesce dan The Dillinger Escape Plan mulai membentuk genre ini.
