Malasit (bahasa Inggris: Malachite) atau Birudi pandan adalah suatu mineral karbonat hidroksida tembaga, dengan rumus kimia Cu2CO3(OH)2. Mineral hijau buram ini terikat mengkristal dalam bentuk sistem kristal monoklin, dan sering kali bentuknya bergugus (botryoidal), berserat, atau massa stalagmitik, dalam retakan dan ruang yang jauh di bawah tanah di mana terdapat genangan air dan cairan hidrotermal untuk terjadinya presipitasi kimiawi. Potongan kristal individual jarang ditemukan namun ada yang berbentuk prisma-prisma ramping atau menjarum (asikular). Bentuk semu (pseudomorf) yang menyerupai kristal azurit tabular atau gumpalan juga dijumpai.[3]

Etimologi dan sejarah

Nama batu ini berasal dari bahasa Latin: molochītis, Prancis Pertengahan: melochite, dan Inggris Pertengahan melochites; dari Yunani Μολοχίτης λίθος molochitis lithos, "batu hijau mallow", dari μολόχη molōchē, varian dari μαλάχη malāchē, "mallow".[4] Mineral ini dinamakan demikian karena menyerupai daun pohon Mallow (sejenis perdu).[5]

Bukti arkeologi menunjukkan bahwa mineral ini telah ditambang dan dilebur di Lembah Timna di Israel selama lebih dari 3.000 tahun.[6] Sejak masa itu, malasit telah digunakan sebagai batu hias dan batu permata.
