Latit adalah batuan beku vulkanik, dengan tekstur afirik-afanitik hingga afirik-porfiritik. Susunan mineral pada umumnya adalah felspar alkali dan plagioklas yang seimbang jumlahnya. Kuarsa berjumlah kurang dari 5% dan pada Latit tidak membawa felspatoid, sedang Olivin tidak hadir pada Latit pembawa Kuarsa ( Quartz-bearing). Ketika kandungan kuarsa lebih besar dari 5% maka batuan tersebut dikategorikan sebagai Latit kuarsa.[1] Biotit, hornblende, piroksen serta kuarsa dan olivin langka sangat sering terdapat di latit sebagai mineral-mineral asesoris.
