Biotit diberi nama oleh J.F.L. Hausmann pada tahun 1847 untuk menghormati fisikawan Prancis Jean-Baptiste Biot, yang, pada tahun 1816, meneliti sifat optik dari mika, dan menemukan banyak sifat - sifat optiknya.[4]
