Imperata adalah genus rerumputan tropis dan subtropis yang kecil namun tersebar luas.[1][2] Spesiesnya berupa herba rimpang perenial dengan batang tegak yang kokoh dan perbungaan yang halus. Spesiesnya yang paling terkenal yakni Alang-alang (Imperata cylindrica).[3][4][5][6] Nama Genus ini diambil dari nama Ferrante Imperato, seorang apotekari Renaisans yang tinggal di Naples pada akhir abad ke-16 dan awal abad ke-17.[7][8][9]
