Hugues Merle (28 April 1822 – 16 Maret 1881) adalah seorang pelukis Prancis yang kebanyakan menggambarkan subjek sentimental atau moral. Dia sering dibandingkan dengan William-Adolphe Bouguereau.

Biografi

Hugues Merle lahir pada tahun 1822 di La Sne.[1] Ia belajar melukis dengan Léon Cogniet. Merle mulai berpameran di Salon (Paris) pada tahun 1847. Ia menerima hadiah kelas dua pada tahun 1861 dan 1863.[2] In 1866 he was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honor.

Hugues Merle menjadi teman Paul Durand-Ruel di awal tahun 1860-an. Durand-Ruel mulai membeli lukisan Merle pada tahun 1862 dan memperkenalkan seniman itu kepada pelukis William-Adolphe Bouguereau.[3] Merle was later often compared to Bouguereau and “became a considerable rival of Bouguereau in subject and treatment”.[4] Pada pertengahan 1860-an, Merle melukis beberapa potret Paul Durand-Ruel, istrinya, dan putra mereka, John.

Hugues Merle meninggal pada tahun 1881 di Paris. Putranya Georges Merle juga menjadi pelukis.[5]
