Dioscorea adalah genus yang berisi lebih dari 600 spesies tumbuhan berbunga dalam famili Dioscoreaceae (Suku Gadung-gadungan). Genus tumbuhan ini tersebar di seluruh daerah beriklim tropis dan hangat di dunia. Sebagian besar spesiesnya merupakan tumbuhan tropis, dan hanya beberapa spesies saja yang menyebar ke iklim sedang.[1][2][3][4] Genus ini dinamai oleh seorang biarawan bernama Charles Plumier, setelah dinamai oleh ahli botani dan dokter Yunani kuno, Dioscorides.
