Aloe vossii

Aloe (/ˈæloʊiː/ atau /ˈæloʊ/), juga ditulis Aloë, adalah genus yang berisi lebih dari 500 spesies tumbuhan berbunga sukulen.[2] Spesies yang paling banyak dikenal adalah lidah buaya (Aloe vera), atau "aloe sejati", disebut demikian karena, meskipun mungkin punah di alam liar, itu dibudidayakan sebagai sumber standar dari yang disebut "aloe vera" untuk berbagai macam keperluan farmasi.[3] Spesies lain, seperti Aloe ferox, juga dibudidayakan atau dipanen dari alam untuk aplikasi yang serupa.

Sistem APG IV (2016) menempatkan genus ini dalam familia Asphodelaceae, upafamilia Asphodeloideae.[4] Di masa lalu, Aloe dimasukkan dalam familia Aloaceae (sekarang termasuk dalam Asphodelaceae) atau untuk familia yang secara luas dibatasi Liliaceae (familia lili). Tumbuhan Agave americana, yang kadang-kadang disebut "aloe amerika", termasuk dalam Asparagaceae, familia yang berbeda.

Genus ini berasal dari Afrika tropis dan selatan, Madagaskar, Yordania, Semenanjung Arab, dan berbagai pulau di Samudra Hindia (Mauritius, Réunion, Komoro, dll). Beberapa spesies juga telah dinaturalisasi di daerah lain (Mediterania, India, Australia, Amerika Utara dan Selatan, dll.).[1]
