Menachem Mendel Schneerson (5 April 1902 – 12 Juni 1994), yang dikenal oleh beberapa orang sebagai sang Rebbe,[3][4][5] adalah seorang rabbi Yahudi Ortodoks Amerika kelahiran Rusia, dan Rebbe Lubavitch terakhir. Kehidupan
1902–1923
Menachem Mendel Schneerson lahir pada Jumat, 18 April 1902, yang bertepatan dengan 11 Nissan 5662, di kota Nikolaev.[11] Ayahnya adalah Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, seorang sarjana Talmudik dan otoritas Kabbalah dan hukum Yahudi.[12] Ibunya adalah Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson (nee Yanovski).
Pada 1907, ketika Menachem Mendel berusia enam tahun, keluarga Schneerson pindah ke Yekatrinislav (sekarang Dnepropetrovsk), dimana Rabbi Levi Yitzchak dilantik menjadi Kepala Rabbi di kota tersebut. Ia menjabat sebagai 1939, ketika ia diasingkan oleh Soviet ke Uzbekistan.[13] Schneerson memiliki dua adik laki-laki: Dov Ber, yang dibunuh pada 1944 oleh para kolaborator Nazi, dan Yisrael Aryeh Leib, yang meninggal pada 1952 ketika menyelesaikan pembelajaran doktoralnya di Universitas Liverpool.[11]
