Pembangunan Louvre tidak terlepas dari sejarah Paris yang mencakup lebih dari 800 tahun,[1] meskipun rencana umum istana tidak dibayangkan hingga Renaisans. Charles V mendirikan kediamannya di sana, yang mempertahankan status istana hingga pemerintahan Louis XIV.[2]
Dengan 10,2 juta pengunjung pada 2018 - seperempat di antaranya orang Prancis, bangunan ini merupakan museum dan situs budaya yang paling banyak dikunjungi di dunia[3] yang terletak di depan Menara Eiffel, Notre-Dame de Paris berada di puncak monumen dengan akses gratis sekitar 13,6 juta pengunjung.[4]
