Heri Dono (12 Juni 1960, Jakarta) merupakan seniman Indonesia pertama yang sukses menembus kancah seni rupa global di awal tahun ’90-an. Ia pernah mengenyam pendidikan di Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta. Mengawali kariernya di tahun ’80-an, Heri Dono dikenal dengan karya instalasi kontemporer yang banyak terinspirasi dari wayang. Ia berusaha memasukan elemen kompleks dalam pertunjukan wayang berupa visual, mantra, suara, storytelling, kritik sosial, humor, dan mitos berisi filosofi kehidupan. Komponen ini ia gabungkan dalam narasi karya-karyanya melalui penambahan elemen multimedia. Karya kreatifnya mengungkapkan ketertarikan Heri Dono dalam merevitalisasi seni yang berakar pada tradisi Indonesia. Pada banyak karya instalasi dan pertunjukannya, Heri Dono juga menggunakan ‘performativity’ dan potensi interaktif yang membuat karya-karyanya terlibat dalam dialog komplimenter dengan audiens. Dalam karya lukisannya ia banyak mengangkat deformasi liar dan fantasi gaya bebas yang berasal dari karakter dan kisah wayang. Kemudian ia menambahkan pengetahuan dan ketertarikannya pada kartun anak-anak, film animasi, dan komik. Kanvas Heri Dono selalu dipenuhi karakter menakjubkan dengan cerita yang fantastis sekaligus abstrak.
Heri Dono sudah berpartisipasi pada lebih dari 300 pameran dan 35 internasional bienial, termasuk Asia Pacific Triennial (1993 dan 2000), Gwangju Biennale (1995 dan 2006), Sydney Biennale (1996), Shanghai Biennale (2000), Venice Biennale (2003 dan 2015), Sharjah Biennial (2005 dan 2023), Guangzhou Triennale (2011), Kochi-Muziris Biennale (2018), Bangkok Art Biennale (2018), dan Gangwon Kids Triennale (2020) di Korea Selatan. Ia juga meraih sejumlah penghargaan, di antaranya adalah: Dutch Prince Clause Award for Culture and Development (1998) dari Kerajaan Belanda; UNESCO Prize (2000), dan Anugerah Adhikarya Rupa dari Pemerintah Indonesia (2014).
