Introduction to editing Wikipedia

Join us to learn how to contribute to Wikipedia, the world’s largest reference work. The first hour of this meetup will cover topics involved with teaching with Wikipedia such as learning outcomes, encyclopedic writing, writing for the public, and examples of class exercises and writing assignments. From 2-3pm, we’ll offer an introduction to editing mechanisms and Wikipedia guidelines, and help new contributors get set up with usernames and articles. From 3-5pm, we’ll work on improving articles. Staff from the Libraries and the Writing, Rhetoric, and Professional Communication program who are experienced Wikipedians will be available to answer questions about editing, writing and researching for Wikipedia throughout the session. Both new and experienced Wikipedians are welcome, and for participants fluent in multiple languages, working in any language Wikipedia is welcome and encouraged. Drop in any time during the session, and bring your questions and ideas for topics to work on! Computers will be available, but participants can also bring their own laptops.

We will also host an edit-a-thon focused on writing about Black history on January 29. You are welcome to attend both events!
