November 2025

Hey there, hope you are doing fine. I recently created a List of best-selling Nintendo video games a few days ago. If you notice any missing entries, then do inform me or include them yourself. Best regards. Kazama16 (talk) 19:42, 21 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

List of best-selling video game franchises inquiry

Hi. The old page for https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_best-selling_video_game_franchises&oldid=1322704571 had a lot of details that were helpful in my opinion. The current one, which I believe you created/approved, lacks detail and feels very lackluster. Can I ask why did you choose to remove all of that detail from the old page? Thanks.

@Enwiki3432e23: Can you specify what details you're referring to? We tried to keep the most notable details, just in a much more compact form. If you're referring to the summaries under each entry, no other list had that format, and it made the list impossible to sort, or to view at a glance. I believe that design was a remnant of the pre-hovercard era, now it's easier to get a quick summary by hovering over links (on desktop, at least). Prefall 18:31, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the swift reply and for making me understand why the page was changed.
What I liked about the old article in terms of depth: a) it listed many more franchises – the more, the better; b) it had different sections for number of copies sold – this categorizing provided a good frame; c) below each title there was a short description – on the page I could search for, say, “strategy” and would find strategy franchises; d) the description below titles offered a clear & quick overview vs. opening that game’s page.
For me the old design was better because of the aforesaid reasons. Every now and then I’d open that page to see what are the biggest franchises. I’ve never had a Wikipedia account and made one just to ask about this.
At a minimum, it’d be great if a new column could be added to the current table of franchises: a genre one.

@Enwiki3432e23: No problem. I'll try to be as open and specific as I can.
I based the redesign off of List of best-selling video games, which has a limit of 50 entries, so that just followed suit here. Wikipedia has a policy against excessive statistical information, so we have to draw a line on the number of entries. And I can only speak for myself, but I prefer a hard limit (e.g., 50 entries) rather than a threshold (e.g., 20 million+ copies) for a couple of reasons. Firstly, a hard limit is stable and evergreen. With thresholds, after a while the list will accumulate too many entries, and the threshold will have to be raised by establishing a new consensus among editors, which can be difficult to accomplish. The previous design had already surpassed a typical number of entries, with 129. Secondly, I believe the appeal of best-seller lists is the accomplishment of reaching a top spot, which is devalued by having an excessive number of entries. Of course, the exact number of entries requires a delicate balance between a low-enough number that feels like an accomplishment, and a high-enough number that the list feels as informative as it should be. From what I've seen, most publications do top 10 or top 20, so 50 seems like a healthy expansion. Not too much and not too little.
Unfortunately, as I said initially, descriptions are just not typically included in these lists anymore, in favor of hovercard summaries. This list had become an outlier in that regard, but I can completely understand why you'd prefer the old way. And yes, we could possibly mitigate some of that loss of detail by adding a primary Genre(s) column. We have used that in similar lists before. Prefall 21:09, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for taking your time to respond and to consider my suggestion! I am pleased with our exchange and trust the article about franchises is in great hands with you contributing towards it. Cheers.

@Enwiki3432e23: I added a column for genres. Since we're dealing with franchises, some of which span many different types of games, I tried to keep it minimal and listed only the most notable/primary genres. Hopefully that's an improvement. Thanks for your input and kind words. Prefall 08:19, 8 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

The game itself was announced in 2022 and is verifiably an upcoming release. A Windows version has not been announced and currently cannot be verified to be coming, yet. Prefall 17:38, 16 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
