Andy Hayt

Andrew Hayt (26 July 1957 --) is an American sports photographer, fine arts photographer, and photojournalist mainly known for his work with Sports Illustrated and the National Basketball Association.

Early life and college

Hayt was born on July 26th, 1957 in Queens, New York. His father was an attorney and third-generation Hungarian-American. His mother was a homemaker from Pennsylvania. Hayt's family moved to Rancho Santa Fe, California in 1969, when Hayt was 12 years old. He attended La Jolla Country Day School[1] when he first became interested in photography. He began shooting photos of motorcycles to use as references for drawing, and became immersed in photography from then on.[2] He began shooting sports in his senior year of high school while working at the Vista Press as a part time photographer, and shot photos for his high school yearbook.[2]

Hayt enrolled at Arizona State University's Cronkite School and attended for two years, majoring in journalism. While in school, he worked for United Press International and the Arizona Republic newspaper.[1] His classmates at Arizona State included John W. McDonough and Bill Frakes.[3] After two years of school, he took time off to work part-time at the Los Angeles Times. He returned to school the following semester to begin his junior year, before dropping out and returning to the L.A. Times as a full-time photographer.[2]

Career

Los Angeles Times, 1976-1979

Hayt worked as a staff photographer at the L.A. Times from 1976 to 1979. He first began as a part-time photographer in college, before dropping out of college to work at the paper as a full-time staff photographer.[2]

While at the L.A. Times, Hayt photographed the first photograph of a high five, between Glenn Burke and Dusty Baker at Dodger Stadium during a Dodgers-Astros game on October 2nd, 1977.[4]

Hayt left the paper in 1979. Speaking on his time at the paper in 1982, he said:

"They were good to me, but it was difficult at times. When you have a lot of creative energy, and it has to go through a lot of channels before anything comes out, it's difficult for people to feel their creative inklings are being satisfied. It can lead to a general disinterest."[1]

Sports Illustrated, 1981-1991

Hayt was discovered by John G. Zimmerman, and joined Sports Illustrated as a Staff Photographer in 1981.[2] He was the youngest staff photographer at the magazine at 25 years old.[1]

Later career

Personal life

Hayt resides in San Diego, California's Golden Hill neighborhood. He has one daughter.

Influence and legacy

Hayt is widely regarded as one of the most influential and respected photographers in sports. He is highly regarded for his technical skills[5] and ability to capture action[2], both manually[5] and digitally.

Sports photographer Brad Mangin mentioned Hayt as being among "national legends [...] at Sports Illustrated who were the best manual focusers in the world."[5]
