Wisdom Martin is an American television news journalist known for more than two decades of reporting and anchoring in Washington, D.C. An Emmy Award–winning broadcaster, anchoring for WUSA-TV(CBS) morning show WUSA9 morning news and co-host of the NFL pregame show Commanders Kickoff. Martin is also an author whose works focus on sports history and in-depth interviews with cultural figures and celebrities.
Early life and education
Martin was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, and raised in Carthage, where he attended Carthage High School. His father, also named Wisdom Martin, was a high school teacher and basketball coach. His mother was an English teacher at his high school During Martin’s childhood, his father was drafted into the U.S. Army, leading the family to relocate temporarily to the Seattle, Washington, area before returning to Mississippi.
Following in the footsteps of his parents, Martin attended Jackson State University, where he majored in broadcast journalism. While in college, he worked as a newsreader and DJ at campus radio station WJSU. As a sophomore, he secured a production job at WAPT-TV in Jackson with help from a classmate. There he worked as a news photographer, editor, and sports reporter, covering college and high school sports. His big break came when he was assigned to cover future NFL quarterback Steve McNair at Alcorn State.
As a senior, Martin reported on the 1994 retrial of Byron De La Beckwith, who was convicted for the 1963 assassination of civil rights leader Medgar Evers. He graduated from Jackson State University with a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism.
Career
Martin began his broadcasting career in 1990 while still a student at Jackson State University, working for WAPT-TV in Jackson. After leaving Mississippi, he held reporting and anchoring positions in several cities.
He worked at KSEE in Fresno, California, covering news and sports, and later joined WRAL in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he reported on Hurricane Fran and produced a story on the 1944 "Secret Game" between North Carolina Central and Duke University. Martin also served as a weekend anchor and national correspondent for CNN in Atlanta and later joined WKRN in Nashville, Tennessee, as an anchor and reporter.
Washington, D.C.
Martin has spent more than 22 years reporting and anchoring in the nation’s capital. He is currently an anchor for WUSA-TV’s morning program Get Up DC (4:25–7 a.m. and 9 a.m.). He is also co-host of Commanders Kickoff, WUSA's NFL pregame show, and hosts Moment of Wisdom on WUSA9+.
In 2025, Martin helped launch Where Is the Money, a daily series focused on saving money and consumer financial issues. In 2024, he anchored WUSA’s AP Award–winning Outstanding Morning Newscast.
