St. Stephen's Anglican Church, Chambly, Quebec, Canada

St. Stephen's Anglican Church in Chambly, Quebec, Canada was built in 1820 for the community and military residing in and around British-held garrison Fort Chambly (a, b, c, d), on the bank of the Richelieu River (e). It represents a simple and harmonious combination of Quebec architectural tradition (its fieldstone exterior, proportions, overall small size of 50 by 30 feet) and Italian Renaissance Palladian style (Venetian-style stained-glass windows in the apse, Tuscan columns, three-tiered steeple) (a, b, c, d). The church was named a provincial historic site in 1965 (d) and a national historic site in 1970 (f).

Few major modifications have been made to the original church. Pews were rearranged and upper side galleries were added in the 1830s to accommodate more people (a, b, c, d). In 1854, the barrel organ was replaced with a pipe organ made by Samuel Russell Warren, a prolific American-born organ builder based in Montreal (g, h). The church features a stone baptismal font (a, b, c, d), donated by troops at the Fort (a); the original (a) high-back boxed pews with panelled doors (b, c, d); and panelled pulpit and lectern (b, c, d). The 10 Commandments and Nicene Creed are printed, large enough for the congregation to read, on a pair of wood panels on either side of the altar.

The first rector was Rev. Edward Parkin (a). The first bell, cast in 1812, was imported from England and presented to St. Stephen's Church circa 1822 (a, b, c, d). Pews were initially sold or leased to parishioners (a, b, c, d), a practice that was later abolished.
