The Dum Dums consisted of five young men from San Fransisco - lead singer George Costas, organist Fred Leibowicz, rythym guitarist Denny Harry, percussionist Johnny Constantinou and bassist Ritchie DeAngelo. The group was formed in 1964 and was first heard in a television show called The Castaways where their single Running was used to accompany three dancing girls. Their second single, Ooh Girl, followed in early 1965 which was second in the US charts for four weeks. This was followed in 1966 by Hippy Chick but did not do so well. Later that same year they collaborated with Johny Wilson in a small tour of the east and west coasts of America. They tried a different style of music and incorporated some Reggae with their own original sound which resulted in their single Pass Out. The band also had small success with some other songs, namely Save Me and I Want You Back, and then My Sunshine Girl. In 1968 the band had some personal creative differences which resulted in lead singer George Costas being replaced by new vocalist Herman Cunningham. In 1969 the band released their next successful hit, Souls in the Rain. Despite the new lead vocals the band still managed to retain it's very distinct sound but due to a studio fire most of their original sound and video footage was destroyed. There are a small number of surviving videos, some of which can be found on www.youtube.com.
