ZFS on Linux (ZoL) port was produced at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) under Contract No. DE-AC52-07NA27344 (Contract 44) between the Department of Energy and the LLNL. The majority of the code in the ZFS on Linux port comes from OpenSolaris which has been released under the terms of the CDDL open source license. ZFS is an advanced file system and volume manager which was originally developed for Solaris and is now maintained by the Illumos community.
ZFS on Linux is currently feature complete. It includes fully functional and stable SPA, DMU, ZVOL, and ZPL layers.
Solaris Porting Layer (SPL) is a module for the Linux kernel which provides many of the Solaris kernel APIs. This shim layer makes it possible to run Solaris kernel code in the Linux kernel with relatively minimal modification. This can be particularly useful when you want to track upstream Solaris development closely and do not want the overhead of maintaining a large patch which converts Solaris primitives to Linux primitives.
