Lunch shaming is a form of public shaming in which schools humiliate students who cannot pay off their school lunch debt. [1][2] It is a method to motivate the student to repay his debt. Examples of lunch shaming include, but are not limited to, offering different meal options to students in debt, banning students from participating in extracurricular activities, and throwing a student's meal away publicly. [3] In the United States, national backlash over lunch shaming has motivated several state legislatures to pass legislation supporting students' access to school lunch.[4]

Notable examples

In 2019, several incidents of lunch shaming were recorded that brought national attention in the United States.

Arm stamping

In elementary schools in Alabama and Arizona, students' arms have been stamped when they have failed to pay off their lunch debt.[5][6] Though often cited an example of lunch shaming [3][2], schools claimed that the practice of stamping was only a means of informing the parent of their negative balance, and of humiliating the student.

Criticism

Several sources have criticized lunch shaming as immoral.
