Despite a career in soil mechanics, became interested to the point of obsession in elm trees after invitation to organize trials of disease-resistant elms as potential Larval Host Plants of the White-letter Hairstreak butterfly, Satyrium w-album, and now manages one of the largest collections of modern (post 1980) cultivars in Europe. Other obsessions include buddlejas, and France, notably la Provence Verte. Contributes far too much to global warming driving Toyota item to escape the south Hants. megalopolis at every opportunity. Is fairly widely travelled in the northern hemisphere, but has yet to cross the Equator. Favourite fiction: F Scott Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night, poetry: Housman's A Shropshire Lad.
