"Where Todd and Brent Misjudge the Mood of a Solemn Day" is the fifth episode of the IFC and More4 television series The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret.

Plot Summery

Todd(David Cross) wakes up to Brent Wilts(Will Arnett) calling his phone. Wilts demands that Todd give him the money from selling the Thunder Muscle, and they agree to meet at the hotel bar. Wilts asks Todd is he’d had sex with Alice(Sharon Horgan) yet, and being told no recommends that Todd “be her type”. Todd then calls Dave(Blake Harrison) and leaves him a message explaining that Todd was going to be contacting the authorities again.

The scene then flashes back to eighteen days earlier in Spokane, WA, where Brent Wilts is working as a temp in a telemarketing firm. Unable to sell anything, he is verbally berated by his boss(Janeane Garofalo). She ultimately receives a phone call from a Mr. Malford who wants her to promote Wilts against her better judgment. It also becomes apparent that Wilts has a gambling problem which results in a coworker demanding payment on a bet.

The scene then cuts back to Todd in his London apartment, where his is stuffing drapes into a cardboard box labeled “Alice Drapes 4 Kitchen”. He then discovers Pam(Sara Pascoe) in his bathroom taking a bath. Although Pam tells Todd that she’s interested in him, he kicks her out of his apartment.

Todd then takes the money to meet Wilts. He is passing through a park when he kicks a soccer ball back to a child but inadvertently hits the child in the face. The child’s father is understanding and forgiving, until Todd makes the same mistake twice, resulting in being chased and beaten up by the child’s father despite Todd’s insistence that it was an accident.

Upon seeing British veterans, Todd asks an old woman soliciting donations what the occasion is. She tells him that it is Remembrance Day. Todd responds by donating some of the counterfeit bills to her while taking back real change, which he uses to buy clothes. He heads to Alice’s café dressed in a hockey jersey and flannel jacket and hat brandishing a hockey stick in an attempt to be Alice’s type, which Todd perceives to be Canadian based on Alice having dated Hudson(Colin Salmon). Hudson takes slight offense and asks Alice if Todd has mental problems.

Todd then goes to the hotel bar where he orders a cranberry juice which he neglects to pay for. He sees a story on the TV news about his apartment, which had to be condemned on account of Todd leaving the tuna out for his cat, leaving 112 people homeless. Apparently the smell was visible from outer space. He also finds out that the Remembrance Day ceremonies are being broadcast on every channel, which gives Todd an idea. He meets up with Wilts, who is getting more anxious about the money. Todd almost tells him that it’s counterfeit, instead lying and saying that the briefcase is made out of counterfeit leather. Wilts tells Todd that there are sixteen thousand more cases of Thunder Muscle arriving, and pressures Todd to sell it. Todd has the idea to use the Remembrance Day ceremony as a marketing opportunity.

Meanwhile, Doug Whitney(Spike Jonez) is in a phone booth calling Global National’s parent company, Integrated Business Solutions, in order to lodge a complaint against Brent Wilts. He subsequently finds out than not only is Wilts not the president of Global National, there is no Global National. We also see Dave in Todd’s office, where he is preparing to shoot a pornographic film.

Todd and Wilts find their way down to the Remembrance Day ceremony dress in ridiculous, day-glo tourist garb in an attempt to blend in. The decide to deck themselves out in “tomato pins” to show even more pride. Wilts continues to berate Todd into selling Thunder Muscle, and upon spotting the Leeds Regiment of the Royal British Legion marching in the parade, goads Todd into approaching them. Todd gets beaten up yet again, leading to more abuse from Wilts. Todd finally stands next to the cenotaph in Whitehall and tries to sell Thunder Muscle with Wilts hijacking a television camera, but is drowned out first by the brass band and after by ringing bells. He is verbally berated by the crown for disrespecting the solemn day, and dejected he dumps out a can of Thunder Muscle. It appears that he’s urinating on the cenotaph to the crowd however, and Todd is tackled and arrested. Wilts verbally berates the crowd as British cowards and is chased off.

Alice meanwhile has seen the news report on television, where they accuse Todd of protesting “Britain’s alleged cowardice in all wars ever”. She’s runs off to help Todd in spite of Hudson’s protest. The news report is also seen by Pam, the Turks, Todd’s “girlfriend”(Amber Tamblyn) and Dave. Todd’s dad(Russ Tamblyn) also sees the report, and goes to help Todd.

The episode ends with a couple walking out of Hudson’s film “At Dusk in the Belly of God”, which both of them hated.
