[6] His expertise has led some to call him the "Sepsis Samurai."

Throughout his illustrious career, Tom has garnered many accolades. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). In 2006, the American Academy of Nursing selected Tom as one of its first Edge Runners.[7] In order to be nominated as an Edge Runners, an individual must develop creative innovations meant to better care for patients, families and the community. Tom is most proud of his Flame of Excellence award, given to him in 2008 by the American Association of Critical Nurses.[8] The Flame of Excellence is only given to a maximum of three people each year. It is meant to recognize sustained contributions of excellence in acute and critical care nursing.[9]
