Salvador Dali was a Catalonian painter. He was born in Figueres Spain on May 11, 1904. Dali was a surrealist painter, his paintings were perceived as eccentric and very strange. He made a reputation of doing unusual things to draw attention to himself. His painting ´Invisible Bust of Voltaire´ used surrealism to create an ambiguous piece of art. It is located in the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. The centre of focus is the bust of Voltaire. The bust appears to be invisible but is just created out of the background figures. Dali uses optical illusion to make the image of Voltaire appear. He makes use of this technique many times in his other paintings. The central image is Voltaire. Voltaire was a very influential French philosopher during the Renaissance. He criticized the Catholic Church dogma and French institutions of his day.
