Osmosis and Passive Transport
Passive Transport is the movement of particles across the cell membrane from an area of high to low without the use of energy. Two examples of passive transport are diffusion and osmosis. Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of high to low with out the use of energy. Osmosis is the movement of water from and area of High to low without the use of energy. An area of high to low simply means higher concentration to lower concentration.
Experiment on Osmosis:
Question: What happens to the water in a potato slice when covered in salt?
Hypothesis: If salt is added to a potato slice then the mass will decrease because considering osmosis the high concentration (potato slice) would transfer water to the lower concentration (salt).
Materials: Potato, salt, tweezers, triple beam balance, slide cup, spoon, paper towl. Control: Potato IV: Salt DV: The change in mass Constants: The weight of the potato
Procedure Overveiw: 1) Take mass of potato slices with triple beam balance
