Peter Anthony Murphy (born 22 October 1960) is an Australian broadcaster and the longest-serving commercial television weather presenter in the nation[1][2]. He is best known for presenting the weather on Nightly News (formerly Southern Cross News and TNT9 News)[3] in Tasmania from 1984 until announcing his retirement in September 2025.[4][5][6]
Early life and radio career
Murphy grew up in Moree, New South Wales, where he began his broadcasting career in local radio.[5] In 1982 he moved to Tasmania to join radio station 7EX, also beginning work as a commercial voice-over artist for TNT9 television.[7]
Television career
Murphy made his first appearance as a weather presenter on 9 September 1984 for TNT9 (later Southern Cross and now 7 Tasmania).[6] In the pre-digital era, he used magnetic symbols on boards to display forecasts, long before green screens became standard.[5]
He became a nightly fixture on Tasmanian television, known for his reliable forecasts, “dad jokes,” and light-hearted delivery.[8] Murphy often worked alongside long-time anchors Jo Palmer and Kim Millar, with his chemistry with Palmer described as “a must-see” element of the bulletin over their 18 years together.[9][10]
Affectionately known as "Murph", Murphy estimates he has presented around 9000 weather forecasts during his period on air.[1]
In 2016, Murphy briefly gained international media attention when he stepped in live on-air to take over the news reading after Palmer began coughing during a story.[11]
On 17 September 2025, Murphy announced that his last broadcast would be on Monday, 22 September 2025 during 7News Tasmania. His final forecast would bring to an end more than 4 years of presenting Tasmania's weather on television. [1][2][4][12]
Other work
Beyond television, Murphy has been a prominent master of ceremonies (MC), hosting major Tasmanian events including the Tasmanian Tourism Awards, Hospitality Awards, Community Achievement Awards[13], Hawthorn Football Club President’s Lunches, and numerous charity functions.[14][7][15][16]
For much of his period on-air he also balanced his duties with work in the finance industry, including with AMP, Westpac and superannuation provider, Spirit Super.[1]
A passionate James Bond enthusiast, he has collected extensive memorabilia including model cars, film negatives, and rare photographs. In 2014, he appeared at the National Automobile Museum of Tasmania with the 1969 Aston Martin DBS Vantage driven by George Lazenby in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.[17]
Personal life
Murphy married Donna Howard in 1992, and the couple have two sons, Jack and Lewis. They also have two granddaughters. Outside broadcasting, Murphy is a longtime supporter of the Sydney Swans and a former nightclub DJ.[18]
Legacy
Murphy is regarded as one of the most recognisable figures in Tasmanian broadcasting history. His contribution has been noted for consistency, humour, and community engagement.[19][20][21]
