I have just read Bill York’s article “Common courtesy in short supply” in the January 8th, 2012 edition of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

How about honesty? It is also in short supply. It’s virtually extinct.

How many people do you know who actually honor their promises?

Many people think nothing of making promises that they have no intention of keeping.

As a merchant, I have experienced many incidents of dishonesty.

The following examples involve customers who did not have sufficient funds for their purchases. All promised to bring it in later. Amounts were from $0.25 to approximately $60.00.

This customer was very vocal about always paying his bills and was perturbed about anyone who did not honor their obligations. Of course, he did not return or pay his balance. Two preacher customers were deceitful.

One lady customer visiting the store for the fourth time said I had cheated her three times. (Why did she return?) She did not have the full amount for her purchase; she agreed to bring the balance in later. She never returned.

It seems to me that people are less honest now, than bygone days.

Over 95% of the customer with a balance on their purchases never returned or paid the amount due.

My philosophy can be expressed in ten words.

“Treat everyone the way I would want to be treated.”

Along with these two phrases.

Never promise anything at all, if you can’t honor it. You’ll be forever enthralled!

You won’t be a nerd if you always keep your word!
