The Angry Video Game Nerd (or AVGN) is a comedy web television series created by James Rolfe, a retro videogame collector. Many of his popular videos show Rolfe playing through poorly made or difficult games, such as Castlevania 2: Simon’s Quest. He derives comic appeal from the excessive and inventive use of anger, profanity, and habitual consumption of alcohol while reviewing video games, hence the show’s title.
Since 2006, the series has been featured on YouTube, ScrewAttack, and GameTrailers, becoming very popular with close to 1 million YouTube subscribers[].
Initially, as the Angry Nintendo Nerd, Rolfe focused on Nintendo games because of their popularity and extensive library of titles. However he eventually began reviewing other retro consoles such as the Atari 2600 and SEGA Genesis. His other videos include relatively newer games, console reviews, B-movie reviews, and reviews of faulty accessories such as Nintendo’s power glove.
Since 2011, Mike Matei has been featured in AVGN, usually playing alongside Rolfe. These episodes are usually much less angry than his usually ranting videos.
Most recently, Rolfe has reviewed classic games and movies, appealing to the nostalgic video game fans, some without angry rants at all.
On the opposite end of things, Rolfe does a series of videos called “You Know What’s Bullshit?” consisting entirely of angry rants and scatological humor.
