About Me

My name's Dominic. I live in Melbourne, Australia. I am interested in Latin American (especially Afro-) and diaspora(mainly Mauritian) culture and also interested in Aztec(Nahuatl), Central Asian and East Asian cultures. I'd like to learn tamazight or n-amazighen, Kazakh and Japanese.

response to your question

How to learn an NY accent? The answer is to fly me out to Australia and I'll give you lessons!! Actually, I'm not a dialect coach, and other than getting tapes and practicing with them, it's hard to say. The most difficult feature is the short a split (described in the article). It's hard to know which words are lax and which are tense, although in fact, NYers vary somewhat, and really only White people do it at all. The classic NY dialect is largely a white thing. The feature that spreads throughout the races is the low back shift. I'd focus on that, affricate (th) and (dh), dental /t/ and /d/ the affricatation of the /r/ after /d/ and /t/. Make sure all your /l/s are dark, and for you r-less comes free being Australian. I think that's most of it.

Good luck. mnewmanqc 17:47, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
