The Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators (CICBV)

Professional Organization

The Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators (CICBV) is a non-profit self regulated organization which promotes the awareness, exchange and understanding of business valuation concepts through the publication of digests, journals, and newsletters, and sponsorship of regional and national events. The CICBV is also the sole administrator of the Chartered Business Valuator (CBV) designation training program and accredition testing.

Chartered Business Valuators (CBV’s) are specialized accounting professionals who quantify the worth of all, or part, of a business or its securities with the ability to determine value of tangible and intangible assets. CBV’s analyze financial records and work toward resolution in shareholder, partnership, securities, intellectual property and marital dispute cases. They are also trained in damage quantification, insurance losses, personal injury claims, patent infringement and breach of contract cases.

Comprised of 1200 Members, and goverened by a nation-wide Board of Directors, the CICBV is headquartered in Toronto and is the largest Business Valuation association in Canada. The current President and CEO is Jeannie Brooks, FCGA.

The CICBV is the developer of a Practice of Standards and a Code of Ethics by which its Members are bound.

History

The CICBV was established in 1971 by twenty valuation experts under the direction of George Ovens.

Demand for Chartered Business Valuators has increased significantly since the passing of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act (2002) and Canada’s Bill 198, legislation that enhanced standards for public accounting firms. According to a recent poll, 80% of expert witnesses in the area of quantifying damages in litigation disputes are Chartered Business Valuators.

Programme of Professional Studies

The CICBV are the sole administrators of The CBV or EEE (d'expert en evaluation d'enterprises)designation. The Programme of Professional Studies(offered through York University's Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies) is comprised of four mandatory (core) courses and two electives, followed by a Membership Entrance Examination (MEE). The mandatory courses are:

•“Introductory Business and Securities Valuation” •“Intermediate Business and Securities Valuation” •“Advanced Business and Securities Valuation” and “Law and Taxation Business Valuation.”

The CBV designation is awarded to individuals who have successfully completed the six Programme of Studies Courses in addition to earning 1,500 hours of practical experience and passing the Institute's Membership Entrance Examination. Standards are rigorous: the pass rate for the MEE is not published but is believed to be approximately 60%.

There are currently 700 students enrolled in the CBv designation Programme of Professional Studies.
