Max Muller's Rig Veda Translation

If you look at Max Muller's own letters you will see that he openly admitted his intention to skew his translation of the Rig Veda to 'uproot' its influence in India and replace it with Christianity.[1] The point is he did not intend to produce a reliable translation and clearly did not, a fact highlighted by his own contemporaries who stated 'we hardly know a volume of which the make-up is more unfortunate and ill-judged, more calculated to baffle... than the first volume of Muller's so-called "translation" of the Rig-Veda...'[2] Mr. Muller's other works (as far as I know, including as an editor) seem to be reliable references but his Rig Veda translation is not.
