Algorithmic Gatekeeping

The term algorithmic gatekeeping refers to the process by which social media platforms and search and recommendation engines determine what a user sees and does not see using personalization algorithms that tailor information based on data collected about the user.[1] These algorithmic systems are black boxes.[2] With communication, politics, commerce, and knowledge increasingly shifting online, information intermediaries including Google and Facebook are emerging gatekeepers in society, a position once restricted to traditional media journalists. The consequence of personalization algorithms used in algorithmic gatekeeping is that users may become encapsulated in filter bubbles.[3] Filter bubbles are further exacerbated by confirmation bias.[4]
