3/2/2019 planning to find sources for this paragraph: San Mateo County bears the Spanish name for Saint Matthew. As a place name, San Mateo appears as early as 1776 and several local geographic features were also designated San Mateo on early maps including variously: a settlement, an arroyo, a headland jutting into the Pacific (Point Montara), and a large land holding (Rancho San Mateo). Until about 1850, the name appeared as San Matheo. (copied from) [1] (1 hr)

3/9/2019 Read through the book South From San Francisco by Frank M. Stanger 1963 to see if i could verify that the name San Mateo came from St Mathew. I could not find any information on this from this book. (2 hrs)

3/9/2019 reading the book Building A Community so I can create a new section to the article of San Mateo county about the settlement of Japanese immigrants in San Mateo County. (2 hrs)

3/14/2019 Added the diaries of Anza and Font as a source of the earliest known mention of the place name San Mateo. I removed the word (and) to create another sentence beginning with (Several). Also I inserted citation information. (1 hr)

3.11.2019- Looks great, Crystal! Start drafting the section on the Japanese in San Mateo. See if there is a section like that for another California City (San Francisco, San Jose...) on their Wikipedia pages. Then model what they include and don't include in your section. Please work on it in this space, below under "Japanese Americans."

3/22/2019- This is good, but pretty superficial changes. Can you draft the section on the Japanese in San Mateo? Even a few sentences to start, so I can give you some feedback.

San Mateo County bears the Spanish name for Saint Matthew. As a place name, San Mateo appears as early as 1776 in the diaries of Anza and Font[1]. Several local geographic features were also designated San Mateo on early maps including variously: a settlement, an arroyo, a headland jutting into the Pacific (Point Montara), and a large land holding (Rancho San Mateo). Japanese Americans

The Japanese first arrived in San Mateo county and were part of a group guided by Ambassador Tomomi Iwakura back in 1872[2]. There were a number of all male Japanese students who came to San Mateo to learn English and many other helpful skills to bring back to Japan[3]. These students were also some of the first Japanese to join American students in the Belmont school for boys. These students had to work for their housing and food before classes and in the evenings[3]. Many of the first Japanese immigrants were able to find jobs as gardeners and landscapers In San Mateo. Most of them had good educational background from their homelands, but their lack of knowing the English language made it difficult for them to find other jobs in the beginning[4].
