Cevdet Pasha

I have chosen to honor Ahmed Cevdet Pasha on my profile because, in my eyes and in the eyes of history he is one of the most important historians of the Ottoman Empire.

He dedicated over 30 years of his life to writing his monumental work, the Tarih-i Cevdet (Cevdet’s History). This is not just a chronicle, but a reflection of disciplined research, official documentation, and insightful analysis. Cevdet Pasha even sought help from European scholars when needed, showing his commitment to accuracy and depth. His work stands as a bridge between East and West, tradition and reform, and remains a cornerstone of Ottoman historiography...

Hatt-ı Hümayun

When we unite through shared knowledge, people will begin to see the truth more clearly. I believe that through collaboration and fact-based historical research, we can reveal forgotten realities together.

In addition, I have a deep passion for the Ottoman Imperial Archives especially the Hatt-ı Hümayun, the sultans’ own handwritten commands and remarks. These documents provide an unfiltered window into the Ottoman state’s soul. They are invaluable in understanding how decisions were made at the highest level of the empire.

Even today, many official correspondences remain undisclosed in the Ottoman archives, now held at the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey Directorate of State Archives (formerly known as the Prime Ministry Ottoman Archives). These documents are national treasures, and I believe that with time and scholarly effort, they will offer further truths waiting to be uncovered.

The legal code prepared by the great jurist and statesman Cevdet Pasha is the first and only legal text in the world to receive an award.
