ASUS motherboard technology
On ASUS server motherboards there is something called a 'PIKE slot', into which you insert a card to get an increased number of SATA ports. I've never seen it for any other manufacturer and can't really find enough documentation to make a page, but maybe one of my fellow wikipedians can. It seems to be a capability upgrade to the onboard controller. Two modules add raid and one or two might add SAS and more connectors? I'm also unclear.

Oh. They enable the extra 8 ports on a compatible board.
