Unnecessary hedging: "Usually, T is a test statistic."
As a reader, if I read "usually" that suggests an exception. But there is no counter-example. A p-value is ALWAYS derived from a a test statistic. Therefore, Wikipedia should drop "usually" in this sentence.
I propose the sentence say "As stated above, T is a test statistic." This matches a sentence earlier in the article, this sentence is present: "The p-value is a function of the chosen test statistic and is therefore a random variable." DavidCJames (talk) 22:09, 29 June 2024 (UTC)

inconsist statement
"However, even if we do manage to reject the null hypothesis for all 3 alternatives, and even if we know that the distribution is normal and variance is 1" doesn't make sense, since 2 of the three alternatives were that: the distribution is not normal and the variance is not 1.Chris2crawford (talk) 17:40, 25 October 2025 (UTC)
Likelihood
Is there any connection between p-value and likelihood? Since 1) the likelihood of a distribution given an event equals the probability of an event given the distribution, and 2) the p-value is the probability of an extremity given the null hypothesis, it seems to me that the p-value would be the likelihood of the distribution implied by the null hypothesis.Chris2crawford (talk) 17:46, 25 October 2025 (UTC)
- p-value is a probability, not likelihood (value of probability density in a point). For example, if you have thrown a coin 1000 times, and the mean is 0.8 rather than 0.5, the p-value says: "what is the probability of getting a mean 0.8 or more if the coin was fair (null hypothesis)". The likelihood would be what is the probability density of getting this series of results, so which for a fair coin is always the same (all results are as likely). ~2026-12503-62 (talk) 11:06, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
