Why so negative?

Done safely and responsibly, flash mobs can be delightful. I was present at Disneyland when a "mob" of singer/dancers, posing as park guests, suddenly burst into one of the songs from Mary Poppins to surprise Dick Van Dyke on his 90th birthday. (When they finished their chorus, Dick, with gusto belying his age, rushed down from the café balcony where he was dining and dove into the second verse, and everyone joined in.)
This article has such a generally negative focus, it makes me wonder if it was written by someone who prefers structure and predictability over spontaneity. As an editor, I've known many such people, and that's fine. However, I don't think it's equitable having them write critically on this kind of social phenomenon, simply because it creates a theatrical illusion of spontaneity.

Aoidh apologies if the reference is not to your liking the fact is - it was a flashmob, it was in 2002 in the place seen in the credits by the people noted. Flashmobbing is another relatively radical - outside usual media - interventionist artwork - video is bulletproof evidence it exists where, when and by whom is was created - can you please accept our facts - Thank you. The issue is not whether or not this example exists, but whether or not it is relevant to include in the article. Not every flash mob warrants inclusion, and a YouTube video is not a reliable source (WP:RSPYT) showing that this example is relevant enough to this article's topic to warrant inclusion, especially when details in the claim made here (i.e., the 2002 date) are directly and unambiguously contradicted by reliable sources in the article. This would need a reliable source at minimum to warrant inclusion in the article, not a YouTube link from an editor promoting their own work. Please read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. Please go to the link 21mins-55ec. This is documented of the place, date, of what appears to be the earliest example of this noted in the article - It is therefore utterly relevant. Please check the credits - they witness exactly who did what. I am not interested in promoting my own work - only work of others who have contributed significantly to the history of art - please respect the artists. Reliable sources determine relevancy and content on Wikipedia, and the content is self-promotional regardless of intent or interest. This isn't an issue or respecting artists or not; this content does not belong in the article per Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, and that is something that should also be respected. If you can find reliable sources showing relevance or backing up the contradictory claim, then I would suggest finding those and bringing them to the talk page as a first step, and using Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard/COI rather than editing the page directly due to the conflict of interest. - Aoidh (talk) 06:32, 14 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
So - you know about it, its date, that it complies with the article's own definition of Flashmob - so if you disregard these facts and do not undo your own censorship - you deny historical cultural veracity and that sadly brings Wikipedia itself into disrepute doesn't it? - have you actually looked at it? looked at the credits? If you have done that homework you'd be in no doubt the 2002 20/20 Flashmob was a significant occurrence - you must know that - so it's up to you now you are informed - you have the baton. All the very best.

cultural veracity is determined by reliable sources (Wikipedia:Verifiability, not truth), as is the claim that it was a significant occurrence. There was nothing remotely promotional about helping disadvantaged youth get on in the world - The work occurred in March 2002. Fact. Front credits. Documented. It meets the criteria of flashmob. Wikipedia accepts the documentation of an event via film as a factual occurrence so is acceptable - The rest is - as I said - over to you. The truth is utterly relevant. Claiming that you personally directed and documented the 'first' flash mob is self-promotional content, and a self-uploaded YouTube video is not a reliable source (WP:RSPYT) and does not substantiate the claims made in the edit. If this is as significant as is being indicated, finding a reliable source that supports these claims should be simple and would be the next step.
