Non Powered?

In the section on locos converted to train-heating units the conversions are described as `non-powered', but surely the engines were kept otherwise they could not have functioned as heating units. Is `non self-propelled' really meant here? Barney Bruchstein (talk) 10:02, 29 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

They are first mentioned in
  • British Railways Locomotives and Other Motive Power: Combined Volume. London: Ian Allan. 1970. p. 49.
as "non-powered carriage-heating units". This description continued for the next few editions, but in
they became "Non self propelled". The similar term "not self propelled" first appears in
for some former Class 08, Class 35 and Class 42 locomotives. These two variants seem to be used indiscriminately in the subsequent editions. --Redrose64 (talk) 11:01, 29 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Road Switcher?

Should we call it a road switcher since it is designed for both mainline freight and yard switching duites? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.93.152.192 (talk) 22:53, 20 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

See the reply that I left at Talk:British Rail Class 14#Road Switcher? and also WP:MULTI. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:50, 21 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
