Fibrobacteraceae is a family of Gram-negative, rod-shaped and obligately anaerobic bacteria in the order Fibrobacterales and phylum Fibrobacterota. Cultured members of the family have been isolated from the gastrointestinal tracts of mammals.[2][3]
The family contains two genera with validly published names: Fibrobacter and Hallerella.[1] Species of Fibrobacter degrade cellulose and other plant cell-wall polysaccharides and occur primarily in the digestive tracts of herbivorous mammals.[2] The two species of Hallerella, H. porci and H. succinigenes, were isolated from the ceca of pigs.[3]
Taxonomy
The name Fibrobacteraceae is formed from Fibrobacter, the type genus, and the suffix -aceae, which denotes a bacterial family.[1]
