Virginia HOSA is Virginia's state-level chartered association of the International HOSA organization. Its headquarters are located at Virginia Tech’s Richmond Center in Richmond, Virginia.[1] Virginia HOSA was founded during its constitutional convention held at the Ramada Inn in Charlottesville on March 8-9, 1980; with more than 433 students and advisors attending.[2][3] Pulaski County High School was the first Virginia HOSA chapter.[4] Virginia HOSA currently has more than 5,000 members across the state.[5]

Chapters

Virginia HOSA has more than 55 chapters across 8 different regions of the state, with some schools having multiple chapters. These regions are aligned with the Virginia Department of Education Superintendent's Regions.[6]

HOSA Day at the State Fair

Virginia HOSA hosts a annual HOSA Day at the Virginia State Fair in Doswell, where students across the state compete in four different competitions though each chapter may only enter a maximum of two of the four competitions.[7] HOSA Day at the State Fair was previous known as Virginia HOSA Exhibit at the Virginia State Fair where it was typically held for about a week.[8]

Fall Leadership Conference

The Fall Leadership Conference (FLC) an annual leadership event that takes place for a day for, members and advisors across the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is usually held regionally, taking place at different locations and dates.[9] In 2020, several competitive events from the State Leadership Conference were held, and winners were announced during the Fall Leadership Conference.[10]

State Leadership Conference

The State Leadership Conference (SLC), also known as the Spring Leadership Conference, is a statewide annual three-day event where students from across the state compete in multiple competitive events, network, and partake in workshops.[11] On average, over 1,000 students compete in over 80 events. Students are also able to participate in recognition events such as the Barbara James Service Award and Healthcare Issues Exam. Competitive events are divided by school level; middle school, secondary school, and postsecondary/collegiate.

State Pins

Like other state and country chartered associations of HOSA, Virginia HOSA annually produces a unique lapel pin that is given out at the State Leadership Conference (SLC).[12] Each year, members may submit designs through the pin design competition held during the conference, with the winning design becoming the official Virginia HOSA pin for the following year. These pins can be kept as collectibles and are commonly used for pin trading at the HOSA International Leadership Conference (ILC).[13][14]

Chinese Auction

Virginia HOSA used to hold a Chinese Auction during the State Leadership Conference to raise money for the VA HOSA Scholarship. It relied on chapters donating 2 items to be auctioned off. This was the only method for raising funds for the scholarship at the time.[15]
