Vicky Chow (born September 30, 1983) is a Canadian American classical pianist who combines traditional piano playing with technological experimentation. She has performed with ensembles such as the BBC Orchestra,[citation needed] LA Philharmonic,[citation needed] and has been the pianist for the Bang on a Can All-Stars since 2009. Her performances of Morton Feldman and John Cage were featured on the BBC’s documentary series 'The Sound and The Fury', based on Alex Ross' book 'The Rest is Noise'[1] and her discography consists of over 25 solo and chamber albums that have been released under various labels.[2]

Early life and education

Born in Vancouver, Canada to family from Hong Kong, Chow began studying piano at the Vancouver Academy of Music aged five[3] with what she has called a “super classical upbringing” with little contemporary music in her home.[citation needed] She made her orchestral debut at the age of ten after placing highest in her age rank at the Canadian National Competition and was selected to play the first movement of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with an orchestra.[4]

Chow graduated from The Julliard School in 2005 with a Bachelor of Music, and then again in 2007 with a Masters in Piano Performance having studied with Yoheved Kaplinsky and Julian Martin.[citation needed] It was at Julliard that Chow made her New York orchestral debut at Alice Tully Hall with the Julliard Symphony, performing Bartok's Piano Concerto No. 1[citation needed] before continuing her studies at Manhattan School of Music where she studied with Christopher Oldfather, where she graduated with a Masters of Music for Contemporary Performance in 2009.[1]

Career

Bang on a Can

While at the Manhattan School of Music, Chow applied for the residency program at the Bang on a Can summer festival at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.[citation needed] She was accepted but could not attend due to scheduling conflicts and would later go on to join the group as a permanent fixture after playing with them at their annual People's Commissioning Fund Concert[citation needed] as well as joining them on tour in China in 2009 when pianist Lisa Moore left the Bang on a Can All-Stars.[4]

Other career highlights

In 2014, Chow released the album Surface Image after commissioning and developing the piece alongside composer Tristan Perich. The piece was written for solo piano which is then run through 40 channel 1-bit electronics, combining very traditional piano playing and scoring with music technology in pursuit of new and specific sounds. Unlike other performances of Chow's which often use prerecorded tracks, the setup required for Surface Image allows the electronic sound to be captured live.[5][6]

Chow has also released two different recordings of Michael Gordon's 2004 work Sonatra in 2018, one in equal temperament tuning and another in a just intonated tuning.[citation needed] The work is composed of various arpeggios at a tempo marked "as fast as possible." This perpetual motion study is described by the New Yorker as "physically punishing."[7] Gordon notes that earlier recordings of Sonatra were around 25 minutes in length while Chow's interpretations run under 15 minutes.[4]

Since 2011, Chow has run the Contagious Sounds concert series for new and emerging artists.[citation needed] Chow currently serves as faculty for the Bang on a Can Summer Institute,[citation needed] the Nief-Norf Summer Festival,[citation needed] and has been faculty at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.[citation needed] She is on the Board of Advisors for Composers Now,[8] and serves as a Student Mentor at Julliard.

Accolades

Awards

She is a regular recipient of grants from the Canada Council for The Arts.[citation needed]

Nominations

Chow received a Grammy nomination with the Bang on a Can All-Stars for their 2015 recording of composer Julia Wolfe's Pulitzer Prize winning work, Anthracite Fields,[9][10] as well as receiving a Juno Award nomination with Canadian composer Vince Ho for her recording of 'Super Villain Etudes.'[11]
