Unspun (stylized as unspun) is an American fashion technology company based in Oakland, California. The company was founded in 2015 and develops automated systems for apparel manufacturing.
The company develops weaving equipment used in garment production workflows.[1]
History
unspun was founded in 2015 by Beth Esponnette, Walden Lam, and Kevin Martin. Esponnette's earlier work focused on product design and textile research related to material waste in garment production.[2]
Early work by the company included the development of custom-fit denim using 3D body-scanning systems that generate individualized garment patterns.[3][4]
By 2017, unspun had expanded its operations to Hong Kong and participated in sustainability-focused innovation programs.[5]
In 2019, the company's denim production system was included in Time magazine's Best Inventions list.[6]
In 2021, unspun introduced the Genesis jeans line in collaboration with EON and Resortecs as part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's Jeans Redesign Program.[7] The company's technology was also included in Time's Best Inventions list in 2021.[8]
In 2022, unspun received B Corporation certification. The company also participated in New York Fashion Week with Collina Strada and received recognition from Adweek and Marie Claire UK. That year, it opened a retail location in Hong Kong.[9][10]
In 2023, unspun raised $14 million to expand its weaving infrastructure.[11] The company also opened a micro-factory in Oakland to demonstrate its Vega 3D weaving machine, which produces garment forms directly from yarn.[12]
In the same year, unspun collaborated with Eckhaus Latta at New York Fashion Week, presenting a collection produced using its 3D weaving technology.[13] The collaboration was covered by The Wall Street Journal, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Teen Vogue.[14][15]
The company was also featured by Newsweek, and its manufacturing model was discussed in Harvard Business Review.[16][17]
In 2024, unspun completed a $32 million Series B funding round led by DCVC, Lowercarbon Capital, and E14 Fund to support deployment of its Vega systems in Europe.[18][19]
In March 2024, the company announced a pilot program with Walmart to produce workwear garments using its 3D weaving technology.[20] That year, it was included in Time magazine's America's Top GreenTech Companies list.[21]
In July 2024, unspun announced additional details of its Series B funding round. Co-founder Beth Esponnette was named to Inc. magazine's Female Founders list.[22]
In October 2024, the company announced a partnership with Decathlon Pulse to deploy Vega-enabled manufacturing systems in Europe.[23] In December 2024, it introduced FitOS, a digital sizing software platform.
In September 2025, Chris Blakeslee, former CEO of ALO Yoga and Athleta, joined the company's board of directors.[24]
In March 2026, Arne Arens was appointed chief executive officer.[25]
Technology and products
unspun develops 3D weaving systems that produce garments directly from yarn without traditional cutting and sewing stages.[26][27]
A 2023 life-cycle assessment of the company's Vega technology reported reductions in carbon emissions compared to conventional apparel manufacturing methods.[28] The company operates micro-factories intended to support localized apparel production, with planned installations in Europe.[29]
Partnerships and initiatives
unspun's technology has been used in fashion collections, including designs presented by Eckhaus Latta at New York Fashion Week in 2023.[30]
The company initially focused on custom denim production and has collaborated with designers and artists on limited collections. In 2020, unspun partnered with designer Jonathan Cheung on a denim collection for Pangaia.[23] In 2022, it collaborated with artist Braulio Amado on limited-edition garments supporting Planned Parenthood initiatives.
In 2024, the company announced a pilot partnership with Walmart to manufacture workwear garments using 3D weaving technology.[31]
