Tocalabs LTD (trading as Toca.io) is a British software company headquartered in The Blade, Reading. Founded in 2018, the company specialises in low-code development platforms, robotic process automation (RPA), and relational data management. Toca operates primarily in high-compliance sectors such as healthcare, legal, and financial services, providing an API-first platform for digital transformation and workflow automation.
History
Founding and initial development (2018–2019)
Toca was founded in 2018 by Mat Rule in Reading, England. The company’s early work centred on a physical robotics prototype named “Kara”, designed to automate digital tasks on tablets via a mechanical stylus. Following incorporation as Tocalabs Limited in June 2018, the business pivoted to software-based automation and launched its first commercial product, Tocabot, in September 2018.[1] Its first customer, Retail Insight, was signed that year and remains an active partner. In 2019, Toca expanded its client base to include organisations such as Prostate Cancer UK and the NHS.
Platform expansion and NHS integration (2020–2024)
In 2020, Toca further expanded its presence within the NHS through partnerships with additional trusts. During this period, the company developed its first major technical architecture, known as "Genesis," which transformed the platform into an enterprise low-code application platform (LCAP).[2] The company's expansion was supported by successive rounds of seed and extension funding from venture capital investors. In 2024, the company released Versions 6 and 7, introducing a relational data architecture, and relocated its headquarters to The Blade, Reading.[3]
AI integration and Prodigy phase (2025–present)
In 2025, Toca launched its second major technical generation, "Prodigy," shifting focus toward Artificial Intelligence and global scalability. This phase introduced native AI features, automated translations, and bot pooling. During this time, the company launched Spectral, an AI-specific product under the Toca.ai brand.
