Tinify is a Dutch online image compression service operated by Tinify B.V., based in Amsterdam. It is known for its web-based tools TinyPNG and TinyJPG, which compress PNG and JPEG images using lossy compression techniques.[1][2] The service also provides a developer API and a content delivery network product called Tinify CDN.[3]
History
TinyPNG was created by Voormedia, a web development agency based in Amsterdam.[1] As of December 2012, the service was publicly accessible at tinypng.org and described its purpose as helping make websites "faster and more fun to use".[1] In 2014, compression support for JPEG images was added.[3] In 2016, support for animated PNG was introduced.[4] The company subsequently rebranded from Voormedia to Tinify B.V. and expanded its offerings to include a paid API and a CDN product.
Products
TinyPNG and TinyJPG
TinyPNG and TinyJPG are web-based tools available at tinypng.com and tinyjpg.com. Users upload PNG or JPEG images and receive compressed versions in return.[5] The tools use lossy compression, applying color quantization to reduce the number of colors in PNG images and thereby reduce file size.[6] Shopify describes TinyPNG as using "smart lossy compression techniques to reduce image file size" and notes it offers API integration and a WordPress plugin alongside the web tool.[2] Search Engine Journal, in a comparison of image compression services, noted that TinyJPG produced an 8.7 KB output from a sample JPEG image.[7]
Tinify API
The Tinify API allows developers to compress images programmatically via HTTPS-based REST requests.[3] Client libraries are available for several programming languages including Ruby, PHP, Node.js, Python, and Java.[3] Shopify notes the API can also automatically resize images, such as generating thumbnails by cropping to the relevant portion of an image.[2]
WordPress plugin
Tinify provides a WordPress plugin, listed in the WordPress plugin directory as "Compress JPEG & PNG Images", which compresses images automatically on upload.[8][6] WPBeginner notes the plugin offers automatic compression on upload, bulk optimization for existing images, and an option to preserve metadata such as copyright information in JPEGs, with a free plan limited to 500 compressions per month.[8]
Tinify CDN
Tinify CDN is a content delivery network product that delivers images with automatic format conversion to WebP and AVIF.[9] It is included in the comparison table of image CDNs in the Wikipedia article on content delivery networks.
