Timothy Tiberius Turner[1] is a fictional character who is the main protagonist of the American animated television series The Fairly OddParents. Timmy is a 10-year-old[a] boy described as "an average kid who no one understands" given fairy godparents because of his miserable life.

He is primarily voiced by Tara Strong and debuted in the Oh Yeah! Cartoons shorts, serving as the main protagonist in the most of the franchise's media.

Role in The Fairly OddParents

Timmy Turner is a misfortunate 10-year-old boy forced to deal with neglectful parents Mr. and Mrs. Turner and an evil babysitter Vicky. He also has to deal with an unfair teacher Mr. Crocker who is always giving him failing grades in school and trying to hunt down his fairy godparents, as well as a bully Francis. He has a malocclusion which he is often mocked for.

Timmy has two best friends in school: Chester McBadbat and A.J. Timmy has also had a long crush on the popular girl in his school Trixie Tang, even though the latter doesn't reciprocate his feelings. Also, Timmy is often the recipient of Vicky's little sister Tootie's love, who has an obsessive crush on him, though he doesn't reciprocate her feelings.

Because of his miserable life, he was one day given fairy godparents Cosmo and Wanda, who grant his every wish, in accordance with Da Rules. However, these wishes usually backfire badly and cause a series of problems that Timmy must fix. In the sixth season, he wished for his fairies to have a child, and thus Poof was born, who would serve as his godbrother who would also participate in granting his wishes. In the ninth season, Timmy adopts a fairy dog Sparky. In the tenth season, Timmy is forced to share his fairies with newcomer Chloe Carmichael due to a fairy shortage.

Character

Concept and creation

Hartman started developing his own series by drawing a picture of a little boy who would become Timmy Turner. Hartman was originally going to name him Mike, after his brother Mike Hartman, but they had a fight that day, so Hartman named him after his other brother Timmy Hartman instead.[2][3] Hartman originally wanted to give him the last name Taylor, but that was close to Tim Allen's character name Tim Taylor in Home Improvement.[4] His middle name is a nod to James T. Kirk from Star Wars.[5]

Hartman wanted Timmy to be able to go anywhere because he never wanted to be stuck for a story transition.[6] Hartman was originally going to give Timmy science powers but decided against it due to Dexter's Laboratory having recently come out.

Timmy's hat was originally blue but was made pink instead because Hartman ran out of blue ink.[7]

Voice and portrayal

Timmy was initially voiced by Mary Kay Bergman in The Fairly OddParents shorts. When the Oh Yeah! Cartoons shorts were rerun, Mary Kay Bergman's Timmy voice was redubbed by Tara Strong due to Bergman's death. Strong has since assumed the role and has provided Timmy's voice in most media. An older Timmy featured in "Channel Chasers" was voiced by Alec Baldwin.

In the film series, an older Timmy is portrayed by Drake Bell, though Strong does reprise her role in A Fairly Odd Summer. In The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder, Timmy is portrayed by Caleb Pierce in a one-off appearance as he gives his fairy godparents to his cousin Vivian before leaving for college.[8]

Appearances

The Fairly OddParents ran for a total of 16 years from March 30, 2001, to July 26, 2017, being Nickelodeon's second-longest running animated series. The series consists of 172 episodes (294 segments), with Timmy having appeared in each one, whether his role be major or minor. Timmy has also appeared in various crossovers, including the trilogy The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour (2004–2006), the short film The Fairly Odd Phantom (2017), and the Bunsen Is a Beast episode "Beast of Friends".

Games

Timmy Turner has appeared in various games based on the series, including The Fairly OddParents: Enter the Cleft! (2002), The Fairly OddParents: Breakin' Da Rules (2003), The Fairly OddParents: Shadow Showdown (2004), and The Fairly OddParents: Clash with the Anti-World (2005). He has also appeared in various Nickelodeon crossover titles, most notably the Nicktoons Unite! series.

Reception

In August 2025, Collider cited Timmy as one of the "10 Most Iconic Fantasy TV Characters Everyone Knows," stating that he is easily one of the most memorable Nickelodeon characters, next to SpongeBob.[9]
